Prince Rocks The Super Bowl, Somehow Becomes "The Safe Choice" For Halftime

Prince

Did you catch that 12-minute mind-blow called the Halftime Show last night? With renditions of "Let's Go Crazy", "Baby I'm A Star", "Proud Mary" (the Ike & Tina Turner version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival song), "All Along The Watchtower" (the Jimi Hendrix version of the Bob Dylan song), "Best Of You" (Foo Fighters), and "Purple Rain" (fittingly played outside in the rain, Prince wowed everyone, much more than the almost entirely lousy commercials did (I won't speak as to the game, since I know nothing of football). And it is an amazing thing when Prince can take anybody's song and play it better than they can (not a surprise with Dylan, whose songs are always better when played by other artists. Try Rage Against The Machine's version of "Maggie's Farm").

I'm still upset with the man in purple for telling me he was retiring to be a Jehovah's witness and then backtracking, but it's a good kind of upset, because otherwise I would not have been able to see him shred like that ever again!

The only downside to Prince is that he is no longer the avant-garde, risque character he was back in 1984. The Baltimore Sun has an interesting story on how Prince has evolved into a "safe" choice for the halftime show. No more "Gett Off" or "P Control" from him, but I'll settle for amazing live performances of the safe ones if that's all he's giving.

Bonnaroo UPDATE: Pearl Jam, The Police, Bob Dylan? Official Lineup Soon!

Bonnaroo

As good as the Coachella news is, there's more: Bonnaroo has allegedly confirmed Pearl Jam as well as a comeback of The Police, and even a showing by Bob Dylan.

The other names reported are Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, Umphrey's McGee, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, The Black Crowes, Ryan Adams, My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, Keller Williams, Hot Chip, America, TV On The Radio, Fountains of Wayne, Modest Mouse, Les Claypool, The Shins, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Toots and the Maytals, The Roots, The Decemberists, Of Montreal, Cat Power, Ozomatli, Perpetual Groove, Band of Horses, John Butler Trio, Nickel Creek, Medeski Martin and Wood, Lily Allen, Neko Case, The Hold Steady, Earl Scruggs, Charlie Louvin, Man Man, Grizzly Bear, Konono #1, The Slip, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Uncle Earl, Annuals, Beirut, M. Ward, Cold War Kids and Girl Talk.

The official lineup is expected on January 31 for the June 14-17 festival. Source: Stereogum

UPDATE: Stereogum indicates that representatives for a number of the artists, Big Hassle, claim there is no truth to the above. Right now, we'll have to stick to whether the artists are reporting the same or not.

Rolling Stone Names 50 Best Albums Of 2006

Click the title to see Rolling Stone's 50 Best Albums of 2006. Bob Dylan's Modern Times takes RS's title this year. I understand how America kowtows to Bob Dylan, and any other time I'd call BS on this one, but I can't say that I thought anything was necessarily better this time around. Actually, it's a pretty good top 10, but c'mon, is The Hold Steady really that good that they get #8, not to mention that they beat Mastodon? Blood Mountain shreds. The Hold Steady play bar rock and rip off Jack Kerouac in one giant cliche of an album. Cat Power is definitely top 10 material, and clocks in at #6.
The New York Dolls hit #11, in what must be the band's 11th incarnation, as band members drop like flies. Pearl Jam comes in at #13, which seems like a fair shake for them. Wolfmother at #15 is decent. That's my top-secret album of right now, as I can't get enough of this '70s metal redux.
I love seeing my girl Regina Spektor at #21! My personal bias would bump her up about 10 spots, but she definitely makes the list. Also, The Decemberists (#23), Justin Timberlake (#26), Tool (#38), Yeah Yeah Yeahs (#44), and Neko Case (#45) come in, deservedly so, regardless of where you think they fall on the spectrum.
Some sadly included albums were Lady Sovereign (#48, she's not that good), Sean Lennon (#41), Thom Yorke (#34, go back to Radiohead, like, now), and My Chemical Romance (#20, maybe in the top 50, but somewhere below 25 would be appropriate).

Motley Crue Tell-All Book To Become A Movie! And The 50 Best Albums of '06, According to Uncut

Motley Crue
The 2001 book The Dirt, a confessional of the sordid history of Motley Crue, is being made into a movie with cameos from Christopher Walken as Ozzy, Val Kilmer as David Lee Roth. The band themselves will be played by no-name something-or-others. Maybe even by women (OK, that's my sideline, that's not the real scoop). That would be fun, though. Source: ABC News

While some great mentions are listed in the bottom 36, the list of Uncut's 50 best albums of '06 thus far, is somewhat disappointing in the top 10. Take a look for yourself. Bob Dylan at #1? Is that just obligatory? Source: Stereogum

Any Given Tuesday Finds More Industry Subterfuge With Raconteurs' "Instant Bootlegs"; New Fiona Apple; Sarah McLachlan Needs You

The Raconteurs are selling recordings of their shows, immediately after the show, and calling them "instant bootlegs." Does it equal a bootleg if it's being released for sale by the performer, presumably in cahoots with their label, and with the label's approval? I thought bootlegs were fan recordings that made their way through the underground. The Pearl Jam ploy wasn't really a 'bootleg', either. Sure, bootlegging has gotten very sophisticated as digital has broken through, but I don't think selling me a CD on the way to the parking lot is a bootleg. Source: Pitchfork Media
Anyway, you can catch The Raconteurs at the GMU Patriot Center on November 17 with Bob Dylan.

In light of the re-release of Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas and the new soundtrack, check out Fiona Apple's new song, "Sally's Song", at Stereogum.

Eek!
Ack! Sarah McLachlan needs you to remind her that Christmas albums are for people like Bing Crosby and Elvis, and maybe James Taylor. More than that, what's with that horrible photo?
