Concert Review: Tool - First Mariner Arena, Baltimore, MD: June 8, 2007

Maynard James Keenan - Tool

Any Given Tuesday last caught Tool at theVerizon Center in DC back in September (read the review here). Just as that show was flawless, thus was the case here. And the overall effect of the show was the same, too. The band played plenty of tracks from 10,000 Days, such as "Jambi", "Wings From Marie Parts 1 & 2", and the show closer, "Vicarious", dedicated in a timely manner to Paris Hilton, as was "Stinkfist" earlier in the show.

The show opener, Melt Banana, is a Japanese speed metal band with some electronic noise crossover. As is becoming AGT's trend, we missed the better part of their set and, from what we did hear, the point, too.

Tool entered the stage to much applause, Maynard in a hunter's orange Puscifer (a side project for Keenan) hoodie and cowboy hat, with the same mohawk as the last tour. As Tool's set progressed, the overlap from the arena tour became even more obvious. The positioning of the band on the stage was identical to the arena tour, as was the majority of the set list. The standout track was "Flood" from Undertow, mainly because it is a bit of a rarity at Tool shows (and where is "Swamp Song"? Can't we hear that one live?).

It is such a pleasure from a technical viewpoint to watch Tool play live. Almost entirely avoiding any interaction with the crowd (except last night for thanking fans for not using their flash photography and making a couple Paris jokes) during the performance, I was transfixed on Adam Jones, Justin Chancellor, and Danny Carey as they expertly did their jobs. Adam and Danny look detached, playing guitar and drums better than almost anyone else I've had the pleasure of seeing live seemingly without effort. Whether their detached look shows because they are lost in their art or collecting a paycheck at this point is hard to say. Only Justin looks like he's really getting into his playing, even doing a little headbanging at times (so remarkably un-Tool, apparently).

The crowd at this particular show was largely a disappointment (at least from where I was standing). Other than one pretty mellow hipster who was giving us a good vibe, we were surrounded by colossal meatheads who commenced to pour their beer on their face like water, before spraying mouthfuls into the air, and girls who danced to metal songs like it was a Grateful Dead show, gyrating and bouncing like Jerry Garcia had just reincarnated into Maynard James Keenan. Can't make this stuff up, folks. I have never been to another concert where people behave so ridiculously, not even Ozzfest.

All that aside, another great performance by the band. Nothing surprising, though, as all the same tricks were repeated from the last tour, including Maynard's slithering profile pulsating to the beat and the point two-third into the show where the band takes a break and commands the crowd to put up their lighters. If you missed the arena tour, check this tour out. It's a few bucks cheaper, and smaller venues. That's a deal.

Tool plays Bonnaroo next weekend. Hippie kids beware, and hold tightly to your beer. Bonnaroo may have never seen a circle pit before.

Setlist for the show:

Jambi
Stinkfist
Forty-Six & 2
Schism
Rosetta Stoned
Flood
Wings 1+2
Lateralus
Vicarious

Exotic Fever Fest 2007: June 15 and 16 in Washington, DC

Exotic Fever Records

Exotic Fever Records is a great indie label in Washington, DC, and they are having a fantastic festival on June 15 and 16 (incidentally, the same weekend as Bonnaroo, but when Tool is headlining what used to be a jam fest, who wants to go to that?) at the Warehouse Next Door on 7th Street NW in DC.

Here's the schedule:

Friday, June 15:

Mass Movement of the Moth
New Idea Society
Den of Thieves
Kathy Cashel
Worn In Red
A Study In Her

Saturday, June 16:

Pash
Bellafea
Liza Kate
Sean McArdle
The April Decca

The fest is 6 bucks a night. Way cheaper than Bonnaroo.

Lily Allen Cancels Remainder of US Tour

Lily Allen

Billboard reports that Lily Allen has cancelled the remainder of her US tour, save for dates at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and a Roseland Ballroom (NYC) show on June 12.

According to Lily's MySpace, the tongue-in-cheek reason is that "my mummy and daddy are very rich, and I have never been in a position where I have never actually had to do any hard work before." More likely is the rash of reports of her drunken shows that are far from worth going to.

Tool postpones spring 2007 tour: Does that include Bonnaroo?

Tool

Drummer Danny Carey of Tool injured himself over this past weekend, and the previously scheduled tour dates for Spring 2007 have been postponed, and are planned to be "rescheduled" according to Tool's fan club. The question is, though, does that include Bonnaroo? It would logically follow, right?

5th Annual Langerado Music Festival: March 9-11, 2007

Langerado 2007

While we're going nuts talking about festivals, and waiting for the V-Day announcement of the Bonnaroo lineup, let's talk about Langerado. Scheduled for March 9 through 11 in Sunrise, Florida, the lineup will include Widespread Panic, Trey Anastasio, moe., My Morning Jacket, O.A.R., Matisyahu, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Medeski Martin & Wood, Galactic, The Disco Biscuits, Sound Tribe Sector 9, The New Pornographers, Los Lobos, Taj Mahal, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Cat Power and Dirty Delta Blues, North Mississippi Allstars, The Greyboy Allstars, Toots and the Maytals, Blackalicious, JJ Grey and MOFRO, Explosions in the Sky, Pepper, New Orleans Social Club, Soulive, Perpetual Groove, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, The Hold Steady, Yerba Buena, Tea Leaf Green, New Monsoon, The Mutaytor, Band of Horses, Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and Steve Reid, Assembly of Dust, The SLIP, Girl Talk, Toubab Krewe, Lotus, Apollo Sunshine, Si*Sé, Rodrigo y Gabriela, The Spam Allstars, Dubconscious, Jake Shimabukuro, Kid Beyond, and many more.

Langerado ought to be a welcome alternative to Bonnaroo if you don't want to deal with the summer heat or the growing commercialism of the fest. You can buy tickets here. Right now, three day passes are $125.

Pearl Jam On European Vacation During Summer 2007, Schedules European Tour. No Bonnaroo For PJ?

Pearl Jam

Pollstar reports that Pearl Jam has scheduled a European tour for this summer, kicking off on June 8 at Passeio Maritimo Alges in Lisbon, Portugal, and includes dates in Spain, Germany, Poland, Italy, Austria, England, Denmark, Holland and Belgium.

More importantly, NME reports a PJ show at Wembley Arena on June 18, and that they will also play seven festivals above and beyond the above dates. With Bonnaroo going until June 17, I'm going to say no to a PJ set.

And with no other PJ dates scheduled for 2007, the speculation all but ends as to their US plans for this year.

Bonnaroo Lineup Will Be Official On Valentine's Day; Police Reunion No Joke

The Police

So maybe the rumors about The Police reuniting at Bonnaroo or Coachella are a farce, maybe not. We'll find out February 14 when the lineup is announced officially.

But, while we wait for that, naysayers shall be silenced by the knowledge that a Police reunion, at Bonnaroo or not, is indeed true, if those Canucks who broke the story are right.

Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, South By Southwest, Etc. 2007 Lineups Revealed; Info on Coachella, Lollapalooza, and more

Wakarusa Festival

Confirmed for June 7, 8, 9, and 10 in Lawrence, Kansas, with VIP and 4-day tickets going on sale Friday, January 12 at 10AM Central Time, Wakarusa 2007 will feature the following bands:

Widespread Panic
Yonder Mountain String Band
North Mississippi Allstars
Alejandro Escovedo
The Mutaytor
Railroad Earth
Tea Leaf Green
The Slip
Little Feat
New Mastersounds
Perpetual Groove
ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra)

. . .with many more to be announced later, meeting the website's promise of "70+ bands." The Slip is an interesting summer circuit addition, and I would suggest Alejandro Escovedo as the wildcard selection, not typically found on crunchy granola festival lineups. But a good choice.

Lollapalooza logo

Summer Camp 2007

The great state of Illinois will host both Lollapalooza in Chicago's Grant Park from August 3 to August 5 (no lineup there yet) and Summer Camp Festival in Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe from May 25 to May 27! Summer Camp is a total crunch-fest, featuring "three nights with Moe" as well as Umphrey's Mcgee and Keller Williams.

Bonnaroo 2007

As for the current summer jamfest titan, Bonnaroo 2007 doesn't have entirely verifiable confirmations, but rumors both solid and flimsy abound. The reputable sources (being the bands themselves, so try here and here) give The Cold War Kids and the John Butler Trio as confirmed members of the lineup. Lilly Allen lists herself as a maybe for both Bonnaroo and Coachella, but says she's definitely doing SXSW.

Coachella

Speaking of Coachella, no lineup announcements, but as AGT has stated before, the festival will be from April 27 to April 29 in Indio, CA.

SXSW 2007

South by Southwest 2007 will hold its music festival from March 14 through March 18. Confirmed speakers for the conference are Pete Townshend as the keynote, Rickie Lee Jones, Booker T, and Joe Boyd. Confirmed performers according to a SXSW brochure linked to on Pitchfork include Lilly Allen, Bloc Party, Devin the Dude, Cold War Kids, Hoodoo Gurus, The Stooges, Turbonegro, Interpol, Matt & Kim, Ghostland Observatory, The Watson Twins, Stax 50th Anniversary Soul Review, and Ozomatli, so far. The brochure also promises interviews with Emmylou Harris, David Byrne, Gilberto Gil, and Terry McBride.
