Swampcandy - The Dirty Suite; Free MP3 - "Rosie"

Swampcandy

SWAMPCANDY: The Dirty Suite

Anyone who's been reading this site for more than a minute should know how much I love the Delta blues and artists like Son House and Leadbelly. Lucky me, now I get to like someone that's still alive and (even better) in Maryland. Swampcandy self-released The Dirty Suite (click the album art to purchase), a stomping blues album that sounds like it comes from the front porches of the deep South.

The production on the record makes all the difference, artfully retaining the analog and humidity of classic blues recordings. As the recording brings us so close to the real sound of Swampcandy, so does the uncanny vocal quality of Ruben Dobbs come as such a shot in the arm. Armed with a baritone growl and a deep-soul wail, Dobbs blows the doors off on "Insomnia". Also the guitarist, Dobbs slides all over the guitar with down-home hollers like "Rosie" and the downtrodden blues of "So Low".

Most of the songs on this album are simple, from a songwriting perspective. Listening to The Dirty Suite, it becomes apparent that the songs reduced to tape can never be reproduced, like any good blues performance. While the songs have a root in a few simple chords, there is a fluidity and free-form quality to the music. Vocals get ad libbed, the guitar slides take on a life of their own, and the foot stomps and hand claps confirm a rabble-rousing good ol' time from song to song.

Thankfully, someone has swept the blues out from under the rug and decided to pay homage to the true blues tradition. With homemade percussion from Kevin Lebling in the form of washboard and spoons and the cadent drums of Noel White and Ken Crawn (and lest we leave anyone out, Rurick Reshettelof holding down the lows on bass), this is no modern interpretation of the swamp sounds of the early 20th century, but a revival thereof.

If you're new to the blues (and by blues, I mean something much more from the depths than The White Stripes), this is a great introduction. Once you start to feel the sound in your bones, Swampcandy will have done the blues better than most.

Neighbors' Night Out Benefit for Zach Sowers

Courtesy of my friends over at Ell Records in Frederick, Maryland:

As many of you already know, Zach Sowers -- a Frederick native -- was the victim of a horrible crime on the evening of June 1st, close to his home in Baltimore, MD. To raise awareness of the growing crime rate in Baltimore and to give support to Zach and his family during his recovery, please participate in the Neighbor's Night Out event happening this Sunday from 2-8PM.

--------------------
Neighbors' Night Out

Sunday August 5th, 2 - 8pm

What happened to Zach could happen to any one of us. But we live and work here because we love our neighborhoods— Canton, Patterson Park, Fells Point, Locust Point, Federal Hill, Inner Harbor— and we have the right to feel safe. Neighbors' Night Out is a bold statement against crime. On Sunday, August 5, 2007 from 2 - 8 p.m., in honor of Zach, neighbors across Baltimore will meet at select bars and restaurants to drink, dine and send the message that we stand together against violence.

We're asking you to stand with us by joining the list of bars and restaurants that have agreed to donate up to 20% of that evening's profits toward the cost of Zach's lengthy hospitalization. Please help us stop the violence.

Visit ZachSowers.com for a full list of participating locations and updates on Zach.

Of special note, there is a location in Frederick now participating. Please come out and show your support for Zach and Anna.

Concert Review: Marilyn Manson, Slayer, and Bleeding Through - Merriweather Post Pavilion, July 30, 2007

Out came the metal this past Monday at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. Bleeding Through, Slayer, and Marilyn Manson joined forces to conjure up what Bleeding Through's Brandan Schieppati appropriately referred to as "a mother's worst nightmare."

Bleeding Through

This writer last saw Bleeding Through at Ozzfest 2006, from a slight distance and through a cloud of second stage dust. My #1 showmate and I remember being thoroughly rocked by their set that morning, but on this night we were essentially unmoved. Maybe it was the respectable vantage point, but the band just did not come off as convincing enough. Layers of distortion covered up bland power chords and a vague odor of fear that the audience might find out these hardcore metal kids are from Orange County. Image missteps aside, the band rocked hard enough on tracks like "Love Lost In A Hail of Gunfire", but they simply lack the credibility of Hatebreed or their showmates in Slayer. With all that, this band's drummer was a flurry of incredible fills and pounding bass. Definitely the driving force behind the sound of the band.

Slayer

No identity crises for Slayer, however, who have not lost a step since Reign in Blood. The alternately dueling and supporting thrash guitars of Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King are, without hesitation, astoundingly ferocious in sound and exquisite in technique. Thrash and speed might be lost on a generation of metal fans, but this tour could breathe new life into the band's fan base, selling a lot of copies of Christ Illusion (read a review of Slayer's latest) or giving an astounding history lesson in American metal. Opening the dusty coffers to bring out "Mandatory Suicide" and the seminal "Angel of Death" (which really pleased a rabid fan behind me, who I think could not believe someone as nerdy as me was all that into the band) and exploding with current tracks including "Cult" and "Jihad", this was the loudest set I have ever heard (the bass from

Dave Lombardo's dual kick drums was blowing my hair back), and Tom Araya made it nearly communal in his affectionate thanks from the crowd. For a band with such vitriolic lyrics and furious sound, they seemed like pretty nice guys!

Marilyn Manson

A different story for Manson, who, first of all, took way too long to come out on stage, and proceeded to engage in constant self-love (thanks, Ginger, for that phrase, and for encouraging me to believe that Slayer is iconic, not cliche) by sticking his hands in places I shudder to imagine, before wiggling his hands over the crowd in what struck me as the most awful of fluid-swapping experiences for the GA crowd. Regardless of his lack of consideration for sanitation concerns, Marilyn Manson is a top-notch showperson. The stage appears from behind the screen enveloped in fog, with electric candles all over, and an absolute rock star in full regalia, slinking up the stage and crawling before his worshippers. The costume and set changes between songs made the show feel like a rock opera, or at least a pop concert, as giant chairs, pulpits, and other objets d'art mingled into the milieu. Sticking to standards like "The Beautiful People", "Disposable Teens", and the current glam-rocked "Heart-Shaped Glasses", all renditioned fantastically, the back catalog stayed pretty much closed on this night, as only one song from Portrait of an American Family comes to memory, left behind for the call-and-response (Irresponsible Hate) anthems of MM's repertoire. Tiring was the penchant for dropping the microphone after every song (don't the sound guys know to turn the mic off as the song ends so we don't have to hear the thud?), but fascinating was the larger-than-life persona of a performer who should give a lot more credit to his band than they currently get. The man-droid poses took the attention off the band's capable performance and cast it upon the conceded star who, love him or hate him, cannot fail to mesmerize and enthrall.

Michael Jackson Home Shopping On Maryland's Eastern Shore?

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson might be moving to the Eastern Shore (St. Michaels to be exact). The Baltimore Sun reports that Jacko is house-hunting in the quiet town, potentially joining a slew of other folks (like Dick Cheney) with too much money pillaging the Eastern Shore. It's one thing when DC dignitaries move in and leave their slime trail behind, but rumors of Michael Jackson coming to town actually intrigue me.

Thanks to Inside Charm City for the scoop.

Rock N Roll Triple Play Balpark Tour with Live, Counting Crows, and Collective Soul

Live

As a huge baseball fan, it is really cool to me to see fairly local York, PA band Live, Counting Crows, and Collective Soul (is it 1994 again?) touring for The Rock 'N Roll Triple Play Ballpark Tour, which will hit 23 East Coast and Midwest cities, first stepping to the plate July 22 in Wilmington, DE (go Delaware! Go Blue Rocks!) and ultimately sliding home Sept. 2 in Fargo, ND.

Live has been together for 20 years, still in their original lineup, and still sell out small nightclub venues regularly when they tour. I am reasonably confident these three bands can sell out minor league ballparks.

The tour will hit minor league ballparks all over, including the Aberdeen Ironbirds and Frederick Keys here in Maryland.

July 22: Wilmington, DE, Daniel S. Frawley Stadium/ Home of the Blue Rocks
July 24: Eastlake, OH, Classic Park / Home of the Lake County Captains
July 25: Washington, PA, Consol Energy Park /Home of the Wild Things
July 27: Dayton, OH, Fifth Third Field / Home of the Dragons
July 28: Comstock Park, MI, Fifth Third Ballpark / Home of the West Michigan Whitecaps
July 31: Erie, PA, Jerry Uht Park / Home of the Seawolves
August 1: Buffalo, NY, Dunne Tire Park/Home of the Bisons
August 3: Louisville, KY, Louisville Slugger Field/Home of the Bats

Derrick Credito

Derrick Credito

Every once in a while, I want to try to throw a nod in the direction of a solo performer from Maryland (and Delaware, if you're out there, stand up!) who I think is doing something good. Today, I want to introduce you to Derrick Credito. D wrote me a while back, and sent me a couple MP3s (all available on his MySpace) from his EP. I was impressed. "Nowhere To Turn" and "The Preacher's Daughter" take me back to a brand of acoustic rock I haven't heard in a long time. Check him out.

Album Review: Gary B & The Notions - Get Those Crazy Notions!; Free MP3 - "Partridge vs. Magpie"

Gary B & The Notions

When I first popped in Gary B & The Notions' EP, Get Those Crazy Notions!, I was pretty sure I was listening to Elvis Costello back before he was doing cameos in Will Ferrell movies. More like circa My Aim Is True(or perhaps a more apt comparison would be This Year's Model, Costello's first album with The Attractions) than Talladega Nights.

In fact, comparisons to Costello are very easy with Gary B and his backing group The Notions. Gary himself may be almost as prolific as Elvis Costello, having a catalogue of over 150 songs in his personal repertoire. With a semi-formal shirt and tie look and an unfettered emotional sound, New Wave has returned to Baltimore. Songs like "Lori" hark back to Costello's "Alison", and the EP kicks off with the sole sound of Gary's voice on "Wear The Ring", akin to Costello's debut which introduces Elvis Costello's voice on "Welcome To The Working Week". With all these parallels to such a rock institution, I would worry that Gary B could, in some totally unintentioned but unescapable cosmic parallel, drop the band like Costello did after My Aim Is True. But that must not happen. Read on!

The chemistry that The Notions have is palpable on "Partridge vs. Magpie", and dispels any suspicion that this quintet is some kind of shtick entertainment routine trying to divine their sound from one place. The rocking and rolling of songs like the aforementioned conjure Thin Lizzy (which I don't think I can say about many current bands, and that is pretty rad), and "The Exercise Song" almost hits me with a rockabilly Buddy Holly feeling. And dare I say I sense a bit of Ricky Nelson? Would you prefer the Kinks?

The obvious breakout track on this EP is "Lori" (if you head over to the band's MySpace page, you'll see the developing legion of Loris all over the MySpace planet who are vain enough to think the song is about them), a soulful lady ballad that sends this EP that's almost enough to be a full-length off with a slow strum. With The Notions, Gary B has found his Attractions. We here at Any Given Tuesday anxiously await a full-length.

Having landed opening slots for artists like Sufjan Stevens, The Hold Steady, Of Montreal, Gary Barrett, Jr. is not new to the scene, and he is not without his accomplishments. Moreover, as Gary B & The Notions there have been slots with Elf Power and Peelander-Z. So if you're not convinced by Any Given Tuesday, perhaps those indie heavies can convince you.

And if you need a taste, download "Partridge vs. Magpie", your free Gary B & The Notions MP3 (while it lasts. To help Any Given Tuesday's bandwidth woes, read our plea).
