Baltimore's San Serac Goes Professional October 9; Free MP3 - "Professional"

San Serac

On October 9, Baltimore native San Serac releases Professional. Reminiscent of David Bowie with even a smidgen of Nine Inch Nails, San Serac is breaking new ground with his electro-funk/dance music with brilliant vocals. Catch the sound on October 17 at Sonar.

September 19, 2007: Regina Spektor with Only Son at Ram's Head Live!

Regina Spektor

Any Given Tuesday last saw Only Son and Regina Spektor at Sonar in November of 2006 (read the review here). While this last week's show Ram's Head Live! didn't mesmerize the author as much as the previous, the sound was 178% better. It would have been 200%, but the girl who sounded (but unfortunately did not look) like a contestant from Beauty and the Geek took some points off.

Only Son started out with a few acoustic songs before launching into his popular iPod band set (an iPod plugged into the sound system plays the backing tracks while Only Son sings and plays guitar). Fun, yes, but after touring once with Regina Spektor, hasn't this guy learned that he has to introduce himself to the crowd a couple times? I kept overhearing people asking, "Who is this guy?" Trust me, Jack, people aren't that bright.

As for Regina, what is there to say that hasn't been said before? A charming woman, a captivating performer. Her voice is masterful and unique, employing beat boxing, unusual forms of percussion, and a perfect blend of imperfection and poise. With recent favorites such as "Fidelity" and "On The Radio" balanced by older ones such as "Us" and (a personal favorite) "Ghost of Corporate Future", Spektor masterminds the art of pleasing old and new fans alike without screaming sell-out.

The intimacy wasn't as palpable at Ram's Head Live! as Sonar, causing concern that Spektor can't satisfy a venue any bigger than this, but for her most forgiving fans, any proximity to her charm and character should suffice.

Tonight at Sonar: DJ Baby Anne (Plus A Special Q&A)

DJ Baby Anne

Tonight at Sonar, DJ Baby Anne will be spinning the Florida breakbeats along with the club sound of Small Town DJs. You can get in for as cheap as five bucks.

Baby Anne was gracious enough to answer some questions for Any Given Tuesday:

1) What/who did you listen to growing up? Who's been your biggest influence?
Everything. Southern rock, disco, alternative, the 80's will always be my favorite. My biggest all around influence is Icey, but my sound influences come from everywhere. Information Society, Joe Walsh, White Zombie, dynamix II, Jackyl & Hyde, other genres of dance music.

2) The Baby Anne/Jen Lasher album, Assault & Battery, was stellar. Any plans for a future collaboration between the two of you?
I hope so. I would love to do another project with Jen but it would be different. Maybe just a bunch of singles. It's not easy to plan when we live in different cities.

3) The original tracks that make their way onto your albums are always great. Do you have any plans to make a whole album of your own productions?
It's always a possibility. I've been thinking of putting something together that includes some of my older tracks as well as new stuff. It might be next after my Past Present Future tour.

4) How do you spend your time when you're not on tour/in the studio?
I do quiet things. I get homesick easily so when I'm home I am at my house a lot with my dogs. I practice yoga, do a lot of gardening and remodeling on my house, I read a lot and watch a lot of Science and History channel. Pretty boring for most!

5) What's in your CD player/on your iPod right now? Do you like to listen to your own music?
I absolutely never listen to my own music or what I play in my live set. My iPod has a ton of chill out music and also stuff like Goldfrapp, Imogen Heap, and Tracey Thorne. When I listen to music that sounds nothing like mine, it makes me enjoy djing more.

Concert Review: Happy Chichester, Busdriver, RJD2 - Sonar, Baltimore, MD 3/25/07; Interview With Happy Chichester

In one of the most eclectic evenings one could spend listening to live music, Happy Chichester, Busdriver, and RJD2 rocked Sonar here in Baltimore this past Saturday, the last night of the current leg of their tour.

Happy Chichester - Sonar: Baltimore, MD

Opening up the show was Happy Chichester, performing his early-evening solo act before a modest audience of scenesters. It would be reasonable to expect an audience to wonder just what a man with a guitar performing an alt-country song called "Silent Movie", complete with harmonica, was doing opening for RJD2. Fortunately for Chichester, his obvious glee when he performs is infectious, and rubs off on the audience. And in case just having fun playing music isn't enough, in a nod to hip-hop heads in the crowd Happy broke out the beatbox on "Me And My Machine", and emulated a didgeridoo during the course of his set. Setting down the guitar, Chichester went on to perform the single from Lovers Come Back (Read a review of Happy's new album, here), "Artificial Fanfare (Music In My Head)", as well as "A Man Needs An Airplane", (kind of) dedicated to the girl in the audience with the airplane earrings. Just as demonstrated on Lovers Come Back, Happy Chichester is a multi-talented musician, and his live set this night is telling of why his live concert bootleg, Live At The Aladdin Theatre, became its own form of underground currency, selling on eBay for as high as $50.

Happy Chichester live

After his set, I had the chance to speak with Happy about the tour and what it's been like traveling as a solo act for the first time, as well as opening for RJD2. Happy admitted that the tour's lineup was obviously somewhat eclectic (Happy's brand being markedly different from Busdriver's maniacally uptempo hip-hop and RJD2's similarly uptempo hip-hop/techno sound), but noted that Baltimore was a city where music fans appeared to be very open to broad ranges of sound.

Discussing performing in different cities, Happy explains that cities have their own persona, and that some cities "like Austin and [based on tonight] Baltimore" are cities that love music and where artists love to come and perform for such a fun and receptive crowd. Having spent the previous night in DC at the 9:30 Club (which Chichester describes as one of the "best places play" anywhere), I explained that Baltimore often was treated as DC's ugly cousin, which he admitted he had heard but reiterated how impressed he was with this night's crowd and how well received he felt by them.

Happy went on to share a small piece of his personal history, being born in Braddock Heights, Maryland, and how special this show was to him, returning to Maryland as a solo artist for the first time. With this brief conversation, and Happy's touching remarks about Any Given Tuesday's review of Lovers Come Back, I left Happy to relax a bit before coming back to the stage with RJD2 as a member of his full band.

Next to take the stage, Busdriver immediately changed the tone of the evening with his uber-speed rapping and ultra-weird stage persona, complete with party hats. After all, it's a party, right? From the piano hook and crowd call on "Avantcore" to the delectable strangeness of "Casting Agent And Cowgirls" and reggaeton beat of "Kill Your Employer", Busdriver by design is meant to mess with your head. Personally, I'm convinced it's all that reverb in the second microphone. Though if Busdriver had delivered on the guitar solo "with my tongue around the frets" that he mentioned, that would probably do the trick, too. Hopefully he'll continue making his mark on hip-hop so it can bounce back from abysmal sales and return to a glory of producing cutting-edge sounds. Busdriver has streaming audio on his MySpace, and MP3s on his site.

By the time RJD2 took the stage, the crowd had already broken loose with the electric boogaloo during the Busdriver set (which one of my accompanying friends, Tim, described as "Lenny Kravitz with crack"), and they were hungry for RJD2 plus his full band. Switching instruments during the set like pop stars switch wardrobes, RJD2, Happy Chichester, and Derek DiCenzo moved around the keys, the strings, and the decks like dervishes, before moved behind the decks and beat machines and cut loose. Complete with makeshift video screen featuring cut scenes and a close-up on RJD2's fingerwork, the crowd got live with RJD2 following up on two very capable opening acts and the full band set.

Album Review: Happy Chichester - Lovers Come Back

Happy Chichester

Happy Chichester, from Columbus, Ohio, has been buzzing around the scene for quite some time. He may be best known as a member of Howlin' Maggie, whose single "Alcohol" hit Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart as well as the Modern Rock chart. You may also know Happy from his work with the Afghan Whigs. Regardless, Happy has released a full-length solo album, Lovers Come Back, aptly released on Valentine's Day this year. Lovers was a long time coming, with songs dating back in original composition up to 20 years ("A Man Needs An Airplane").

The songs on Lovers are an amalgam of songs telling different stories, creating a tale which is very much influenced by, and pays homage to, Columbus. From the pop-rock single "Artificial Fanfare (Music In My Head)" with its sing-along chorus to the more political and strained but equally catchy "Lost Connection", the songs are the product of a career with many bands but with one common demoninator: Happy Chichester from Columbus, Ohio. Even if the lyrics tell their different tales, the music itself speaks about a living, breathing city that means almost as much to Chichester as his wife, Laura, for whom he wrote the simple heart-on-sleeve piano track "Lover".

A multi-tasker of a musician, Chichester plays the mass of the instruments on the album, but enlists scene musicians like Foley (who plays bass on "You're Blowin' My Mind") and Barry Hensley (who plays pedal steel guitar on "Lover" and "Silent Movie"). With Lovers Chichester is demonstrating that Columbus is "a musical community rich in talent, experience, and generosity."

Critically, Lovers Come Back comes out clearly as a labor of love. Eclectic in its composition, Lovers broadly sweeps across the spectrum from rock ("Lost Connection") to alt-country ("Silent Movie") to Motown soul ("You're Blowin' My Mind"). Although disjointed to the point of confusion at times, that seems to be part of the point. This album is Chichester's musical biography, and with his vast background of musical alliances, it is only right for him to sail the seas of musical genres on his LP. He does so with an artist's ear, which is severely lacking in much "popular" music, and has delivered an album long overdue from this talented artist.

Happy Chichester is playing at Sonar in Baltimore this Saturday, March 24 (check here around Monday for a review) after a show at 9:30 Club the night before. Happy is opening for RJD2 and is a guest member of RJ's band for the duration of the tour. Also playing is Busdriver.

Visit Happy's website to buy the album.

GZA

Went to see the GZA at Sonar last night. It was a free show for those who RSVP'd, but some of us have to keep a regular 9 to 5 schedule, and as of 11:30 PM, he had yet to be seen, so my pal and I had to take off. Anyone who was there, let me know how awesome it was.

Alright. The rundown. Jet?? No. Lupe Fiasco, worth a shot. He's also at Sonar in Baltimore on December 10. Deftones, I'll be there. Gwar, that's worth seeing one time in your life. Ray LaMontagne, I would be there except, well, it's 30 bucks. Matisyahu does a pretty good live bit, but he's turning into somewhat of a parlor trick. Gogol Bordello is supposed to be wicked live, so that's worth checking into. Thievery Corporation, 3 days in a row? Aren't people over them yet? And Hatebreed, heck yeah. But I'm going when they are at Ram's Head Live with Killswitch Engage on December 15.

And here's some MP3s of pure effin' metal:

Concert Review: Regina Spektor at Sonar, Baltimore, MD 11/19/06

Regina Spektor

4 out of 5 stars.

The things one goes through to see a small venue show. It's not a particular surprise to see a burgeoning artist and rising star like Regina Spektor in a small venue, but she's close to packing some bigger places than Sonar, and the problems coming with the venue remain: long lines in the cold, lots of stamps on your hand (Kristen forgot her ID, and I wasn't drinking, anyway), and parking lots with an army of vagrants ready to protect your automobile for a price. When we cram into these tiny spaces, I always leave the camera at home for fear of it getting smashed between me and some hipster (anyone have photos and want to share?).

The opening artist, Only Son (also on MySpace), AKA Jack Dishel, did his set with an iPod for a band and an acoustic guitar in his arms. Quite talkative, with a good sense of humor, and Kristen commented "come on, you'd let your daughter date a guy like that." I'm not sure what that means, and we don't have a daughter, but the set was good. The single "My Museum" as well as "The Captain's Dead At The Controls" were highlights. His rapport with the crowd develops quickly, with self-deprecating humor and subtle cracks between songs.

Following the respectable opening act, there was a long wait before Regina arrived on stage. Too long. Does she sleep until 8:45 every night? Is that why even a Sunday show doesn't start until after 9? Regardless, she steps upon the stage wearing a tutu and begins with an a capella rendition of "Eight Miles High" with finger-tapping-microphone percussion. It is at this point, with no instruments to support her, that you realize Regina Spektor's voice is, in a word, remarkable. Most comfortably falsetto, but quirkily reaching into baritone.

Playing current staples such as "Fidelity", "Better", "Samson", and "Hotel Song" ropes in the most crowd participation, but Soviet Kitsch material such as the Patti Smith-quoting "Poor Little Rich Boy" with its drumstick-and-chair-seat percussion, as well as "Your Honor" and "Ghost of Corporate Future" also please Regina's audience. The live rendition of "Apres Moi" with Spektor's native Russian verse is hauntingly beautiful, and the broad vocal range in "Field Below" almost reduces the listener to tears with its soulful brooding. Fortunately, when Regina straps on a mint-colored 6-string for "That Time", all you can do is smile and enjoy.

Spektor is a fantastic musician. She can play a piano expertly, but her vocal capabilities far overshadow her finger work. Her voice never falters, never indicates an error the whole night. And her backing band adds a live intensity that could not exist with just one person.

Between songs, the "I love you, Regina!" shouts get old (and, on this particular night, the requests for "Little Boxes", not even her song; Pete Seeger is the only singer I can come up with), and she appears to ignore them (finally telling the requesting party that she doesn't even know the song, and offering an apology in the form of "I suck like that"), graciously accepting the applause with "thank you so much" after every song. Yet, somehow, her thankfulness remains sincere. And she takes offense to those who would be raucous during her set, telling one screaming juvenile to "get the **** out" and then retracting with an offer for that same person to "go the bar, and tell them Regina is buying you a drink." Unlike some artists with a modest catalog of material, Spektor's set lasts well into the night, ending about two hours after it began, including encore.
