The Early November, Matchbook Romance Break Up

The Early November

The Early November have announced that they are taking "an indefinite hiatus" at the end of the current tour. Having released an overly zealous double (correction, triple. . .thanks, Anonymous) album, The Mother, the Mechanic, and the Path last year, and currently touring in support of it (the tour ends 4/14 in Philadelphia), the band says "We've decided we need to take some time and see that life isn't all dirty rock clubs, rest stops at 2 am, and long distance phone calls. We have to be where we haven't been in the past six years; with our friends, family, and loved ones."

I'm down with that. Good choice based upon good reason, fellas.

Matchbook Romance

The same goes for Matchbook Romance, who are also calling it quits after a moderately successful release with Voices.

Any Given Tuesday's Shameless Plea For Your Support

Here at Any Given Tuesday, we don't often get whiny and ask for support, but today is one of those days. Since starting up back in September of 2006, things have been speeding along at a pretty good clip, with site visitors and subscribers increasing regularly, and often in exciting spurts. So, thanks! It means a lot to see those hits, particularly from those of you who continue to stop in on a regular basis.

That being said, AGT needs your help. As popularity grows, bandwidth gets used up (insert collective groan here) and it makes it harder to offer you the legal MP3s we try to dish up whenever possible. Not only that, but we want to leave Blogger and get hosted somewhere that loves us, so we can store MP3s, images, and our pages on one server. To do that, we need the readers to help out. The easy way is money. You can donate by clicking on the Paypal button in the right margin. That's too easy, and you don't get your money for free (but if you're one of the few that does get free money, please, share it).

The easier way (even though it helps Google and other giants get paid) is to click on advertisements. There are Google ads at the top of the screen, and all album titles and album art link to Amazon.com. Just clicking on Google ads gets us paid, and everything you buy at Amazon gets us a commission. (On the Amazon note, we're interested in an indie distro partner that will help us sever ties with the corporate conglomerate.) Google sees revenue from your clicks, too, but you aren't shelling out your scratch.

It is important to say that AGT isn't here to get rich. We go to work every day at regular jobs, and those aren't making us rich, so this site certainly isn't going to do it, either. We simply want to cover the overhead and keep bringing you great news and other material. Your funds will go exclusively to hosting costs, server storage, phone and mailing fees, etc. The absolute pie-in-the-sky dream over here is to break even doing what we're doing.

Another free and wonderful thing you can do is subscribe to Any Given Tuesday. On the right margin are buttons to add the feed to your feed readers, to subscribe via email, and to add the site's RSS feed to your web browser (Mozilla Firefox is capable of it, and so is IE7). Increased subscriber numbers will allow us to obtain advertising revenue from our RSS feed.

Caveat: Any Given Tuesday is not going to clog the site with advertisements. We want to bring you ads that are relevant to what you like. And we want to do that without Amazon and hopefully without Google. They can partner with the big boys and girls. We want subscribers and hits that make it worthwhile for smaller organizations to hook us up with ad revenue. You benefit by seeing ads that don't entirely suck.

So, that's the solicitation. Help us help you. Order of priority for the help you can give: (1) Subscribe to the site. (2) When you log on in your browser, do it through http://www.anygiventuesday.info rather than the Blogger address). (3) Donate (a buck, two bucks, that's more than Google is giving). (4) Click on ads every time you visit (and you can right click, open in a new tab/browser, and you won't leave this page!). (5) Join us on MySpace (the page will tell you more about AGT). Plus (6) you can call us or email us and let us know how we're doing (contact info is in the top-right margin), and leave comments on the site! We love you all and want to communicate with you!

Thanks for coming to Any Given Tuesday, and thanks for continuing to stop by. Here's to another six months, and to making it six years.

Nine Inch Nails Releases "Survivalism" Video, Single Now On iTunes

Viacom Files Suit Against YouTube

Viacom

MTV parent company Viacom has filed suit in the U.S. District Court in New York against YouTube and its parent, Google, seeking more than $1 billion in damages on claims of widespread copyright infringement relating to the alleged displaying of more than 160,000 unauthorized video clips from Viacom subsidiaries.

The parties had been in negotiations for several months, however, after the talks broke down last month Viacom demanded YouTube to remove more than 100,000 unauthorized clips. YouTube said at the time that it would comply with the request and said it cooperates with all copyright holders to remove programming as soon as they're notified.

A statement issued by Viacom states that YouTube's business model, "which is based on building traffic and selling advertising off of unlicensed content, is clearly illegal and is in obvious conflict with copyright laws." Viacom and other objectors to YouTube's practices hold that YouTube fails to take the reins and police the site for copyright infringement, instead shifting the burden onto the "victims of its infringement."

Universal Music Group had previously threatened suit before reaching a licensing agreement with the company. Others who have signed licensing agreements include CBS and NBC.

New Royalty Rates Could Smash Small Internet Radio Stations

After discussing for over two years, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has set rates for commercial and noncommercial webcasts and Internet simulcasts, which some executives say will put small internet radio stations out of business.

Under current copyright law, owners of sound recordings must license their music for noninteractive webcasts and simulcasts. Webcasters and broadcasters may negotiate an individual rate directly with copyright owners or they may obtain the statutory compulsory license from government-designated agency SoundExchange at a set rate. SoundExchange must pay 50% of the royalties to the copyright owners (typically labels), 45% to featured artists and 5% to a union fund set up to pay background/session musicians and singers.

The Small Webcasters Settlement Act, which essentially let the little guys pay a percentage of revenue, expired in 2005. Now the CRB gets to set the rates for everyone big and small (currently $0.0008 per stream, with a minimum of $500 annually per channel or station).

Album Review: Slayer - Christ Illusion

Slayer. To fans, they are beyond icons, they are the immortal image of metal, be it thrash, hardcore, or straight satanic doom. To everyone else, they're the band with the freakshow fans who carve "Slayer" into their flesh (thanks mostly to a Slayer EP cover, but maybe from the kid who sat next to you in math class who smelled like pot all the time).

As a huge metal fan, other metalheads would slap me for not listening to Slayer. But, here it is, I had never listened to a Slayer album before today. Yeah, I've heard them, but never listened. Therefore, I don't have Slayer tattoos, brands, or flesh wounds. But I do have Christ Illusion, the 2006 album produced by Rick Rubin (who also produced the seminal Reign in Blood and just about everything else Slayer has done) and released on Rubin's American Recordings imprint.

Recently voted Revolver Magazine's "Best Guitarist/Guitar Team", Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman are my new guitar gods. The chugging riffs on "Skeleton Christ" and "Catatonic" had me ready to stagedive off my couch and romp around in the pit (though I'd never get into the pit at a Slayer show. Too much blood). I'll get hate mail, but my greatest criticism of Slayer (other than Kerry King wearing his own band's shirt all the time) is Tom Araya. Slayer's vocalist is, first and foremost, a bass player. And it shows in his vocals, which often float right on top of the bass lines in the songs. Overall, Araya comes through, both in vocals and bass. And Dave Lombardo (voted "Best Drummer" in the Revolver poll) on drums ferociously pounds his way through the whole album.

"Jihad", with Araya screaming "This is God's war!", is written from the viewpoint of the 9/11 attackers, which ends with a verse quoting the handbook of the attackers. This will remind the whole world why Slayer is so controversial, though the band takes no sides in the song. Presenting an alternate viewpoint is the Grammy-winning "Eyes of the Insane" speaks to soldiers in the war, particularly a recently-returned soldier battling with post-trauamtic stress disorder, and ironically, is one of the weakest representations of the band on the whole record. "Supremist" is classic thrash and typical Slayer criticism of what they consider the mind-controlling quality of religion, closing out the album with screaming vocals and Hanneman's screeching guitar.

Christ Illusion is cold, hard proof that Slayer, after twenty-five years, is still on top of their game, and are largely responsible for why metal has lasted and managed to rudely and crudely claw its way to the forefront of popular music.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza tickets will officially go on sale April 3. The lineup is expected later that month.

Album Review: Dawn of Man - In The Bronze Age EP

Dawn of Man - In The Bronze Age

Released on March 6 (and which I've had a copy that I've been sitting on for way too long without reviewing), Dawn of Man's In The Bronze Age is a four-song EP produced by TV On The Radio's David Sitek. Singer Alison Russel's voice is mostly monotone and always breathy. A post-punk 90's pop rock teaser, In The Bronze Age comes out strongest on "The Chosen", breaking off onriffing guitars and thumping drums, and a simple chorus that gives just enough to make this the best song on the EP.

At times sounding like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (with a couple more members and a lot more sophistication), Dawn of Man's EP might not strike you as excellent at first, but it's going to grow on you. The subtle attack of the guitars (thanks to minor chords) and a quick rhythm show a lot of room to deliver on the full-length.

To buy In The Bronze Age, head over to Dawn of Man's label, Postfact Records, or to Morphius Records, a fine Baltimore label.

We're Calling SpiralFrog Dead Before Launch

SpiralFrog

Any Given Tuesday has covered the announcement of SpiralFrog, an ad-supported free music download service, as well as its delay and supposed revival. But it is mid-March, and with the December 2006 and subsequent February and "early 2007" launch dates having come and gone, where is this Frog?

SpiralFrog's music files won't be transferable to a CD, nor will they be compatible with iPod. so does anyone really care now? So, even if SpiralFrog does launch, Any Given Tuesday is going to be a naysayer and call it dead before launch.

Video: Harlan - "Computer Games Under The Sun"

Indie kids, fall in love. I think the squirt bottle concept is fun, and it's one of the cuter videos I've seen in some time. A nice synth/circuit bending + guitar = indie dance track equation.

New Releases for Tuesday, March 6, 2007: Air, Arcade Fire, Korn, RJD2, Albert Hammond Jr., Chimaira

Today's suggested pickups for new releases:

Air - Pocket Symphony: French electronic duo returns with another dose of minimalism.

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

Albert Hammond, Jr. - Yours To Keep - Fans of The Strokes, buy up.

Chimaira - Resurrection: Because the world needs metal. Lots of it.

Korn Unplugged: I thought this would be absurd. But I caught a listen of a few tracks, and it's a very well-done improvisation of the album material, haunting at best, intriguing at worst.

RJD2 - Third Hand: Lots of buzz for RJ lately. This is why.

NIN

Nine Inch Nails will be hosting a series of listening parties from March 11 through March 27 in cities across the US. If you can't make it, check out the MySpace page for more singles that have just been posted.

NIN's site also reveals the Survivalism single has been delayed, with no info on why or when it has been rescheduled.

More importantly, the concert scheduled for tonight at Birmingham Academy has been rescheduled to August 28 due to "circumstances beyond our control," according to the band. Is it the vast Year Zero conspiracy?

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction on VH1 Classic, March 12

Some of the inductors have been announced for the 2007 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jay-Z will induct Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, while Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder will induct R.E.M. and Keith Richards will roll in the Ronettes. Patti Smith will be inducted by Rage Against The Machine vocalist Zach de la Rocha, who just recently came out of hiding to reunite with his RATM bandmates. Viva la Rocha!

Velvet Revolver (who are prepared to release their second LP, Libertad, produced by Brendand O'Brien) will introduce Van Halen, if the latter even shows up. Being as combustible as Van Halen is, Velvet Revolver will be performing in their place. If Eddie Van Halen could channel all his frothy, foamy rage, I believe you could power a small city for weeks.

The ceremony will be broadcast live for the first time on VH1 Classic on March 12.

Korn goes Unplugged while drummer goes on hiatus

Korn

David Silveria of Korn has announced he is taking a hiatus from the band, and will not play on their upcoming studio album. Has he found religion like Brian "Head" Welch did? Maybe not, but some might argue this signals the end of Korn as we know them.

Korn will release Mtv Unplugged on March 6, 2007.
