Meet Santa From Tori Amos' American Doll Posse, and Listen To The Whole Album!
Staying true to form, Tori Amos has introduced Santa from the American Doll Posse. Read Santa's blog to learn more about her. Tori says that "Santa is somebody who's a girl's girl. She understands her fellow sisters and she believes that there is enough love and passion out there for everyone. But she won’t accept that there is something perverted about being very sensual and she won't drink shame with her sensuality." She's the saucy one, I take it.
More exciting than hearing just one of Santa's tracks, head on over to Tori's MySpace to stream American Doll Posse in its entirety! I'll see if I can work out a review real soon.

Album Review: The Jennifers - Colors From The Future; Free MP3
Baltimore indie pop stalwarts The Jennifers have been making music as sugary sweet as the gumdrops on the cover of Colors From The Future since 1994, when they released Nine Days Wonder.
Kicking off with the power pop Dorian Gray allusion "Mrs. Gray", Colors is lyrically amusing, with simple rhymes but a wit that has its home in the quirky city of Baltimore. Allusions to XTC obvious and ubiquitous, the songwriting is much comparable to Robyn Hitchcock (read Any Given Tuesday's review of Hitchock's latest, Ole! Tarantula, here). Like Hitchcock, The Jennifers offer up alt-pop with tongue-in-cheek, obvious yet ambiguous lyrics. And try "Queen of Eyes" for The Jennifers' take on one of Hitchcock's songs.
"Fell In A Hole" offers up Dick Dale guitar, and "Starfleet Academy" is an atmospheric dream pop change of pace. When "Oh Caroline" comes through the speakers, consider yourself challenged not to move a head or foot to the sound.
The longest track on the album, "Lion In Winter", is probably the most unique. Blues guitar and near-whisper singing lead into the chorus, followed soon after by an interlude with bridge and break lasting for several minutes before returning to the delicate twee pop that the Jennifers are so adept at expounding upon.

Wal-Mart To Trim Retail Space Dedicated To CDs, Replace With iPod Accessories
In a further blow to the CD industry (particularly of note in a week where Nine Inch Nails and Avril Lavigne are expected to peak at 200,000 units), Wal-Mart is removing approximately half of the square footage dedicated to physical album sales and replacing it with iPod accessories.
I won't buy music at Wal-Mart, nevertheless shop there in the first place. But I can still complain: Not just MP3 player accessories, but only for iPods? Next Wal-Mart will install physical iTunes download stations where I can download edited tracks onto my iPod for 93 cents each. Gotta shave a few pennies off, don't ya, Waltons?

Ozzfest Staple Performer Black Label Society Declines This Year's Freefest, Zakk Wylde To Join Ozzy
Black Label Society, often an Ozzfest staple, will not be playing the fest this year. Zakk Wylde made the call, citing the decision to make the festival free this summer as the main reason. Zakk, however, will be playing guitar for Ozzy, who will be headlining Ozzfest.
I take it Ozzy must be paying his band, at least. And I'm still waiting to see what other worthwhile acts will join the bill.

City Paper Brew Fest 2007
. . .was totally awesome! Had a great time out there with good friends. My only suggestion for next year would be live music. But there was lots of good beer (and some terrible ones, too), and the weather could not have been better.
The only downside was the event sold out! Well, maybe not so much a downside, as people were not elbow-to-elbow and the lines were not bad at all. Perfect planning, City Paper! See you next year!
Did anyone else make it out?

Gorillaz To Stop Creating Albums
The best news I've heard all week: Damon Albarn confirms no more Gorillaz albums, saying "there won't be another pop record."
I'm so happy to see the Gorillaz go. Pure shtick, too unbelievably ubiquitous considering the lack of substance in any of their songs. Bye bye!

Nine Inch Nails Give A Free Secret Live Show In Los Angeles
How awesome is this whole Year Zero thing? There is now an alternate reality game taking place, and the group Art Is Resistance (AIR) from the Year Zero websites is taking on a tangible form, thanks to fans. Last night, they were then taken to a warehouse in Los Angeles for a "private resistance meeting" and then escorted via elevator to a stage where Nine Inch Nails performed six songs:
The Beginning of the End
Survivalism
Last
March of the Pigs
We Are in this Together
The Frail
All this before a "SWAT team" busted in and broke up the party. Sick!

Slash Won't Deny Possibility of Guns N' Roses Reunion
Slash has stated he wants Velvet Revolver to stop playing Guns N' Roses (still no Chinese Democracy?) and Stone Temple Pilots songs, and wants the two groups (GNR and Stone Temple Pilots) to get back together, if only "just for the fun of it."
I guess it's up to Axl to give up the ghost on Chinese Democracy, and give peace a chance.

Lily Allen Cancels Remainder of US Tour
Billboard reports that Lily Allen has cancelled the remainder of her US tour, save for dates at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and a Roseland Ballroom (NYC) show on June 12.
According to Lily's MySpace, the tongue-in-cheek reason is that "my mummy and daddy are very rich, and I have never been in a position where I have never actually had to do any hard work before." More likely is the rash of reports of her drunken shows that are far from worth going to.

New Release: The Greyboy Allstars - What Happened To Television?
Check out the newest album from The Greyboy Allstars, What Happened to Television?, out today. The first studio album from the group in ten years, there is a lot of jazz-funk material here that had been waiting years to hatch.
The Greyboy Allstars, produced by DJ Greyboy, blend a host of sounds and influences to make a full-length groove out of TV, from hip-hop to soul, funk to jazz, and even some gospel-style vocals ("How Glad I Am", featuring The Living Sisters fronted by Inara George). It isn't often that you get to hear such diverse artists on an album together, and it actually works.
"Still Waiting" is one of the more uptempo cuts from the album, with a funk guitar groove, horns and keys that are guaranteed to get you in the groove. Try also "Old School Cylons", an instrumental jam that shows off Karl Denson's flute skills.
To get a taste of the GBA sound, listen to "How Glad I Am" and "V Neck Sweater" from the album.
The Greyboy Allstars will be at Rams Head Live! in Baltimore on May 11.

Album Review: Coffinberry - God Dam Dogs
From Lakewood, Ohio, Coffinberry make rock and roll. And it is pretty good rock and roll. It's the kind of rock and roll we would have heard at Lollapalooza's side stage in 1994. Controlled use of effects and feedback in the guitars, and vocals that remind me of Cop Shoot Cop's Tod A., but maybe an octave or so higher. Unlike the band I refer to, which wrote dense songs with thick bass and a heavier bent, Coffinberry writes songs (mostly clocking in at just over two minutes) that have a pop sensibility. "Sonogram" is a good sample, a dissonant guitar tune, abruptly short, but absurdly enjoyable.
The track that opens the album, "Packrat/Survivalist", kicks it off with a power chord riff and introduces an album that is in its entirety rock-radio friendly. "Freeway Ends" is a screamer track with Superchunk guitar and drums and blissfully jagged vocals, reviving a sound that has been long missing from the rock scene.
If you're a fan of short, simple, infectious alternative rock, Coffinberry is what you've been waiting for. The songs are catchy, aggressive, and do away with the overdone masking of using production to hide a lack of musicianship. With God Dam Dogs, Coffinberry has given alt-rock fans honest-to-goodness music with no pretentiousness.

For those of you who have been reading for a while, you might be interested to know that my review of Thrushes' Sun Come Undone was just republished at SEN Baltimore Magazine. SEN (pronounced "scene") is a graphics-intensive guide to Baltimore nightlife that just recently published its second print issue (which you can pick up free at various locations around town).

Accepting Submissions For Metal Monday
Any Given Tuesday loves metal. That being the case, I am trying to start an ongoing feature that I'm going to call "Metal Monday". Not terribly creative, absurdly obvious, yes. But it's metal.
If you are a metal band, and want to be profiled as a part of the feature, contact me using the info on the right of the screen. The concept is to post a photo, a bio, an MP3, and maybe some show dates if that is available. Interviews are always a possibility, and so on.
Also, I'd like to do other types of profiles in different types of music, including electronic, hip-hop, folk, bluegrass, you name it. Ideally, a day of the week could be dedicated to various types of performer. I'm open to ideas.
Podcasting. Roughly toying with that idea. If your band wants to pop in for an interview on a lo-fi setup that folks can download and listen to, that might be an option.
Any other ideas for features to do on the site? What do you want to see more/less of?

Dashboard Confessional at the Brick Awards
Can anyone please tell me why Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional cut off his perfectly coiffed hair? Kristen and I are very distraught about this new development.
That aside, I wasn't terribly impressed with the performance of "Stolen". Or Chris's hair. Or the girl with the violin. She has always driven me nuts. An all-around let-down.

Congratulations to Baltimore southern rockers The Perfect Poor on the release of their new album, which, from what I've listened to, is kind of like Conway Twitty changed his sound and went metal. They are hosting a CD release party at Fletcher's on Saturday April 14 at 9PM, along with Junkrod Joe and the Cadillac Hearse, The Cheaters, and "special guests". Tickets are $7, but $10 will get you a ticket AND the CD.

"Clyde", nee Tori Amos, of the American Doll Posse; Stream "Bouncing Off Clouds" From The Album
We all anxiously await American Doll Posse, the new album from Tori Amos due May 1. While you so anxiously wait, listen to "Bouncing Off Clouds, performed by Clyde, one of the members of Tori's American Doll Posse. (If you're confused about the whole Doll Posse thing, read AGT's coverage of Tori's announcement of the Doll Posse)
And while you're at it, read Clyde's blog. According to Tori's email introducing Clyde and providing the link to her blog, "Clyde, who draws from Persephone, wears her emotional wounds on her sleeve, but remains idealistic. She is looking at the effects of not being a whole person. She is trying to figure out what she believes in and she is dealing with having been disappointed in her life."

James Iha, D'Arcy Out On Smashing Pumpkins Reunion
James Iha has denied any involvement with the Smashing Pumpkins reunion, telling Rolling Stone, “No, I’m not part of the current Smashing Pumpkins album or tour, I haven’t spoken to Billy in years."
I am not at all surprised that Iha won't be participating, but who will be taking his place? And can the band be as good without their axe man? What do you think? Let me know who you think should play guitar in Iha's place, and whether anyone can do it as well.
Oh, and no D'Arcy on bass, or at least that's what's been alluded to. Auf der Maur has said she'd be more than happy to help out.

Lollapalooza Organizers To Absorb Ticket Convenience Charges
Lollapalooza tickets will carry no surcharges this year, according to a Pollstar report. Festival organizers say the fees will be absorbed in the ticket price itself. So, WYSIWYG, according to the festival organizers. "For $55 a day, 130-plus bands, including Pearl Jam's only North American appearance all year, along with everything Chicago has to offer and a great site at Grant Park, is tough to beat. It's a great value," said Charlie Walker, VP of C3 Presents, the Lollapalooza organizer.
This presents an interesting take on fees that ticket vendors like Ticketmaster charge. Have promoters been deflating the apparent cost of a ticket by opting not to pay the vendor and leaving the vendor exposed to charge the customer itself, necessarily making vendor fees public? There is no national competitor of viable proportions to Ticketmaster, therefore no price wars, which has allowed vendor fees to continue to swell over the years. Along with Ozzfest in challenging the current business paradigm, will Lollapalooza be changing the ticketing business?
